The green dot on a friend’s avatar means they’ve been active on Snapchat recently. Snapchat calls it the Activity Indicator. It doesn’t prove they’re on the app this second, and Snapchat doesn’t say how long “recently” lasts. Anyone can switch theirs off, so no dot doesn’t mean they’re away.
- Snapchat Support: the dot shows a friend has “been active on Snapchat recently, and will show up unless they disable it.”
- Hide yours in Settings > My Privacy & Data > Activity Indicator.
- It shows activity only. It doesn’t reveal who they’re chatting with or where they are.
How to turn off your green dot
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon in the top-left corner.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to the App & Privacy section and tap My Privacy & Data.
- Under Privacy Choices, tap Activity Indicator.
- Turn the toggle off.
Snapchat says that once it’s off, your friends can’t see whether you’ve been active recently. The steps are the same on Android and iPhone.
What the green dot doesn’t tell you
- Not live. “Recently” can mean they closed the app a few minutes ago. Snapchat doesn’t publish the exact window.
- No dot isn’t proof of anything. They may have turned the indicator off, or simply haven’t opened the app lately.
- Not a chat signal. Whether a friend has your conversation open is a separate feature that shows inside the chat itself.
- Not location. Who sees you on Snap Map is its own setting under My Privacy & Data. Hiding your Map location leaves the green dot alone, and the reverse.
Green dot vs other Snapchat signals
| Signal | What it means | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Green dot on an avatar | Active on Snapchat recently | My Privacy & Data > Activity Indicator |
| Bitmoji on the Snap Map | Their shared location | My Privacy & Data > Who Can See My Location |
| Friend emojis next to names | How often you Snap each other | My App > Friend Emojis (iPhone) or Customize Emojis (Android) |
FAQ
Does the green dot mean someone is online right now?
Not necessarily. Snapchat’s wording is “active on Snapchat recently”. Treat it as “opened the app a little while ago”, not “watching their screen now”.
How long does the green dot stay on?
Snapchat doesn’t say. Its help page describes the indicator only as recent activity, so any exact number of minutes you read elsewhere is a guess.
Why don’t I see a green dot for some friends?
They may have switched the Activity Indicator off, or they haven’t used the app recently. Snapchat describes the dot as appearing on your friends’ avatars, so expect it only for people you’ve added.
Will friends know I turned my green dot off?
They just stop seeing a dot on your avatar. Snapchat doesn’t describe any alert when you change the setting, and it looks the same as you not having opened the app.
